Course number : WPD-409-05   ID : 48
« back to classes page
Students will learn both theory and practical skills in Phlebotomy; theory topics to include working in healthcare, health and safety, troubleshooting difficult draws, and working with all demographics from neonatal to geriatric patients. Practical skills in phlebotomy will cover how to perform both venipunctures  via hypodermic needles and winged-infusion needle sets (butterflies) and capillary blood draws via fingerstick and heelstick methods, as well as procuring high-quality specimens for diagnostic testing.

Although certification in phlebotomy is not required in the state of Maine, it is important to both prospective employers and to patients. Successfully obtaining certification is also valuable to the phlebotomist as it shows that they care about their career choice. To be eligible to sit for the certification exam, students will have to perform a minimum of 40 live draws. The cost of the exam is $115 and is paid at the time of registration for the exam through the National Healthcareer Association.

In order to participate in the course, students (or parents if the student is under the age of 18) must sign a liability waiver and provide a current immunization report, prior to the start of the class.
